The Curriculum
Our Curriculum Intent
At Whitchurch C of E Primary School, we believe that children learn best when they feel secure, valued and supported by the adults and peers in their school. We aim to teach children to forge a strong partnership with peers, adults in school, parents and carers to support their learning experiences. Through our curriculum we intend children to develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and others (including globally).
Our curriculum is created to enable all children to acquire knowledge that takes them beyond their experience. It is knowledge that they may not have access to at home, among friends or in the communities which they live.
Our curriculum will be aspirational for all children and seeks to create a culture of trying our best, whilst ensuring that all children are supported to achieve their individual potential.
Integral to our work as a Church of England Primary school, we will encourage spiritual thinking so that children build a greater understanding of themselves, others, beauty and the wider world and to develop personal beliefs. We will work on building resilience by encouraging a positive mind set which allows children to make mistakes and learn from them.
The curriculum will be designed to build upon prior learning, be engaging and memorable. We will ensure that the children have firm foundations for learning by securing their skills and knowledge of the core subjects of language, reading, writing and mathematics. The children will be able to apply these skills to further their learning within all curriculum areas. In particular, developing a love of reading and reading for pleasure is at the centre of our curriculum.
Our curriculum aims to help children deepen and broaden their understanding of the world, their place in it and their responsibility towards its care. They will understand the power and beauty of human creativity and physicality. We will enrich our curriculum through hands-on learning, development of pupil voice, visits and visitors, outdoor learning (including Forest School) and links with our community and Mityana. Beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum, we will provide opportunities to nurture children’s talents in a variety of areas such as sport, art, drama and music.
We aim for children to leave Whitchurch C of E Primary School enthusiastic for further learning and ready for the challenges of the future.
